The Middle Child of Africa
The Story of Brenda Fassie
A TIME CAPSULE FROM TOMORROW
Brenda Fassie serves as a symbolic “Middle Child of Africa.” Raised within Zulu traditions in Langa yet propelled into the global spotlight as an international rockstar, her life reflects the fracture between cultural roots and urban spectacle. Her story becomes a metaphor for a wider generational condition: trapped between belonging to the past and navigating an uncertain digital future.
The project is envisioned as a time capsule from 2125, containing Afrofuturist artefacts that capture this cultural in-betweenness: a graphic novel and an amapiano remix. Encased in a time capsule, it would enable future generations to experience how South Africans previously perceived themselves through Brenda Fossie’s narrative.
Amapiano remix, featuring improvised saxophone: Remix track: “Vuli Ndlela x Mama I’m Sorry (Afrofuturist Frequency Mix)”.
Added saxophone melodies (performed live) serve as both tribute and reinterpretation, weaving new emotion into Brenda’s timeless sound, together with Amapiano rhythms.
The remix transforms Fassie’s renowned song into the Amapiano genre, the quintessential sound of contemporary South Africa. Saxophone improvisation fosters intimacy and continuity, connecting he legacy to jazz and live performance traditions.
This hybrid soundscape serves as a discourse between the past and the future, memory and innovation. Enshrined in a time capsule, the track would serve as a record of adolescent culture and a foretelling of future African soundscapes.
